Safety was perhaps our biggest consideration when creating the project. The State Street Redevelopment Project (SSRP) will improve traffic safety and mobility for all users – vehicles, bikes, pedestrians and transit.
Simplifying transportation network
Traveling along or around State Street can be confusing at times. The SSRP will convert a number of one-way roads to two-way traffic, and push heavy traffic and trucks to thoroughfares that accommodate a larger number of vehicles to alleviate traffic along State Street. The project is also expected to improve parking conditions along State Street.
New gathering places
New gathering places are planned that will create a sense of place as you enter West Lafayette from the east and travel throughout the corridor. Plentiful outdoor seating will invite people to gather, socialize and connect or dine al fresco with coffee or lunch from one of our restaurants featuring international cuisine. Visitors will enjoy improved walkability to eclectic shops. Striking sculptures will enhance the entrances to the Village where the streets can be closed for festivals or home football game events.
One of the goals of the SSRP is to transform State Street into a place people want to be – a vibrant, thriving area. By increasing the number of people visiting the area, the local businesses there will have access to a larger pool of prospective customers. As the popularity of a newly-renovated State Street increases, the area will be positioned to attract more businesses – creating more jobs, strengthening the economy and keeping West Lafayette moving forward.
an Innovative Community
Upon completion of the SSRP, the newly transformed State Street will help draw development to the Purdue Innovation District.
