Progress continues on State Street Redevelopment Project

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Sept. 6, 2017) – With the final layer of asphalt down on a portion of State Street, visible progress continues to be made on the State Street Redevelopment Project.

Crews will finish striping the newly-paved section of road, continue installing the artful railing and outdoor seating, begin some landscaping work and open more of the cycle track to bicyclists this week.

A group bicycle ride will be held next week to help familiarize cyclists with the newly opened portions of the cycle track. Specific information about the ride will be shared on University and State Street Redevelopment Project social media accounts.

“We’re excited to be at a stage of the project where certain areas are beginning to look more complete,” says Don Petersen, managing director of capital program management at Purdue University. “We think people who haven’t been here recently and are coming into town for the first football game will be impressed by the transformation that’s taken place over the course of the last few months.”

The portion of State Street from Littleton Street to North University Street reopened to motorists in mid-August, and while work continues on the other areas of State Street between the Wabash River and U.S. 231, City of West Lafayette Director of Development Erik Carlson encourages community members and visitors to keep supporting businesses throughout the project’s duration.

“If you come to the Chauncey Village area now, you’ll get a good sense of the atmosphere this project is creating,” Carlson says. “The area looks fresher and more welcoming, and while you’re in the area, don’t forget to visit all of your favorite businesses.”

Construction will continue along portions of State Street through the end of November and begin again in early 2018, at which time work will focus on Stadium Avenue, Williams Street and Airport and McCormick Roads.

The community is encouraged to regularly visit www.statestreetwl.com throughout the project for up-to-date information. Community members may also sign up for Nixle alerts to receive emergency updates and traffic reminders via text message or email. Sign up by texting the West Lafayette zip code, 47906, to 888777 or by selecting "Alerts" on www.statestreetwl.com.
